About Our Podcast

Valerie Milburn and Helen Sneed first met ten years ago in Austin during a training weekend for the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Both women had never told their own dramatic stories publicly, and they were astonished to learn that their recovery journeys had such value for individuals dealing with mental health challenges, and those who love and care for them. As their knowledge of mental health issues grew, they were determined to reach wider audiences of all types, including underserved communities where mental health crises were escalating.

The chance to create a podcast came out of the blue in the middle of the pandemic. Two things were certain - they wanted to tell the unvarnished truth about psychiatric disorders, and to convey the powerful hope they had developed throughout years of struggle and victory. They built the Mental Health: Hope and Recovery Podcast from scratch. Since then, the podcast has won two national Signal Awards for raising the bar in podcasting, the international Positive Change Podcast Award for the Mental Health category.

Now in its fourth year, the chief objective for Mental Health: Hope and Recovery is to inform and inspire other individuals fighting for recovery at any stage of the journey. Some of the strongest and bravest people in the world are in this battle. For Helen and Valerie, it is a privilege and inspiration to be of service by sharing their stories, ideas, and words
